The whitebait fishing season begins 15th August and runs until the 30th November. The whitebait season for the West Coast of the South Island is 1 September to 14 November inclusive. The Christchurch City Council has adopted the Ōtautahi/Christchurch and Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū/Banks Peninsula Biodiversity Strategy, providing a local response to the Government’s New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy.
The strategy provides guidance on biodiversity issues relating to Council policy, plans and bylaws while respecting urban Christchurch’s Garden City character.

Wastebusters Wearable Arts is an event in which Garments are made from recyclable products and transformed into art forms, highlighting alternative and unique ways of using recyclables There are 4 classes and entrants will compete for over $5000.00 prize money. the 2008 event takes place at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on 22 August.
