Environment Canterbury councillors have voted to endorse an interim vehicle access route for whitebaiters to North Canterbury’s Ashley River mouth this coming season. The whitebaiting season for most of New Zealand (not the West Coast) begins August 15 and runs to November 30.

Change to hearings timetable for statutory policy statement change connected with Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy. At this week’s Environment Canterbury meeting, councillors agreed to revise the timeframe for the hearing of submissions on Proposed Change No.1 to the Canterbury Regional Policy Statement (RPS).

Landowners or groups working to protect and enhance native biodiversity in Canterbury have until the end of August to apply for contestable grants of up to $5,000 through Environment Canterbury’s Environment Enhancement Fund. This year ECan has $237,800 available - $180,000 from Environment Canterbury’s Environment Enhancement Fund, and another $57,800 from the Honda TreeFund.
